Gene McKenzie, age 69, of Gladstone passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2019.

Gene was born August 16, 1949 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the son of Lester and Ruth (Ellis) McKenzie. He served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 and was honorably discharged. Gene worked for many years as a laborer in the construction industry and was a member of Laborers International Union of North America Local 1329. He enjoyed hanging out at 4-J’s Restaurant, riding his moped and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Gene is survived by his son, Rob (Bobbi) McKenzie of Rapid River; his daughter, Carolyn (David) Wright of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren Connor and Cameron McKenzie and Kayton Gagnon; longtime companion, Colleen Bower of Sault Ste. Marie; brothers, Lyle (Kathy) McKenzie of Kipling and Harold (Cathy) McKenzie of Sault Ste. Marie; sister-in-law, Dolores McKenzie of Sault Ste, Marie, nieces and nephews and former wife, Sue McKenzie-Duroy of Columbus, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lawrence McKenzie.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 20 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military Honors will be presented at 1:00 PM by the Gladstone American Legion Post 71.

    Rob and Carolyn, I am so sorry for your loss. There really aren’t any words to describe the loss of a parent. Know that you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

    So sorry to hear about Gene. My Grandmother Was Doris McKenzie. I haven’t seen Gene in many years but have happy memories when we were both in high school.
